With five departments in engineering, ranging from mechanical to environmental, Portland State University - Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science has strong connections with many of the city's top companies. The university's Capstone program geared to prep graduates for the workforce is ranked among the 10 best by U.S. Worlds News & Report There are five undergraduate programs to choose from at the smaller University of Portland which features the Freshman Design Program as an end-of-semester competition that has groups of three students design, test and demonstrate an engineering device. This year more than 150 students competed. In nearby Corvallis, a drive to become a Top 25-ranked engineering school has brought lots of money into Oregon State University which has eight departments. A new entrepreneurship minor tailored to engineering students will help jumpstart the careers of students looking to start their own business.
Nearly every profession is expected to experience growth in Portland, but the engineering should have a healthier-than-average growth of 29 percent because many of the businesses expanding will be in the technological or architectural fields, reports the Oregon Employment Department. In 2004, Portland had 7,600 engineering jobs, but is predicted to have almost 10,000 by 2014. The state is expected to add 11 percent to its number of heavy and civil engineering jobs and 29 percent to its architectural and engineering services job roster in the same period.
