The newest program to the area is in Forest Grove, where Pacific University will offer a four-year Bachelor of Science degree entry-level dental hygiene program to begin in the fall of 2006. Portland Community College offers a degree in dental hygiene, a certificate in dental assisting and an associate degree and two-year certificate in dental laboratory technology. In Gresham, Mt. Hood Community College grants an associate of applied science degree for its dental hygiene program. Schools with programs in dental assisting include Concorde Career Institute and, in Beaverton,Cambridge College. Those students interested in becoming dentists should consider Oregon Health and Science University which boasts nine departments and a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) Degree Program.
The Oregon Employment Department projects healthy growth in dental careers in Portland for 2004 to 2014. Jobs for dentists are expected to rise 26.3%, an addition of 41 jobs with 7 average annual openings. Dental hygienists and dental assistant openings are each projected to grow by 30.4%, with increases of 233 and 431 jobs respectively by 2014.
